In July 2014, the governments of China and New Zealand reached an agreement on the establishment of a consulate general of New Zealand in Chengdu. The consular district of the Consulate General is Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Chongqing.
On November 12, 2014, the New Zealand Consulate General in Chengdu officially opened. It is the fourth consular office of New Zealand in China after Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. At the opening ceremony, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and his wife arrived in Chengdu to attend, and also brought a delegation, which is more than 40 elite representatives from New Zealand’s business and education and other government departments.
